Ann Gates - Founder of Exercise Works!

Ann Gates has worked as a health care professional for over 30 years. She is on a mission to get every patient accessing and enjoying exercise. Ann is an Honorary Associate Professor at The University of Nottingham and an Honorary Visiting Professor at Marjon Plymouth University.

Ann describes herself as a philanthropist, pharmacist, exercise advocate, author, speaker, social media "passionista", and a disruptive innovator.

Current partnership work includes: The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, The UK Council of Deans of Health, Public Health England, the Peoples Uni, Physiopedia, Swim England and Nottingham University School of Medicine and Health Science. She has also worked with Dr Mike Evans of 23 1/2 hours fame.

Teaching commitments cover: guest undergraduate lectures at The University of Nottingham, Department of Physiotherapy, Coventry University Physiotherapy, University of Leicester Physiotherapy and Glasgow Medical School, University of Nottingham MSc Physiotherapy courses, and masterclasses on exercise medicine and "A Movement for Movement."

Ann is a published author with Higher Education & Medical
McGraw-Hill Australia & New Zealand, with her exercise sheets becoming available online and digitally in December 2012. These "patient exercise sheets" are now available solely under licence via Exercise Works! Ltd. Sample "patient exercise sheets" can be seen here.

She is a regular contributor to the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM). Her BJSM editorials about "training tomorrow's doctors, in exercise medicine, for tomorrow's patients" and "making every contact count for physical activity: the launch of the undergraduate, interdisciplinary, resources on exercise medicine and health, in the UK" are both articles ranked in the top 5% of all articles tracked by Altmetric, and in the top 10 BJSM articles.

She is also a passionate champion advocate for the World Heart Federation and part of their emerging leaders programme for 2014.

The Exercise Works! team are available as consultants in advising on how to support nations, communities and families develop successful physical activity and exercise programs and initiatives. A 2 day "exercise as a critical medicine" in the prevention and treatment of disease is available for doctors, fitness professionals and allied health professionals.

The course covers the key learning points as part of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence recommendations on exercise advice in primary care.

As a Personal Trainer, Chronic disease Exercise Specialist, and INWA Nordic Walking Instructor she is passionate about ensuring that patients and the public receive quality exercise advice and support from health professionals at every opportunity. Exercise seen as a medicine enables patients to enjoy the benefits of exercise and lead happy, healthy fulfilling lives whatever their circumstances. For this to happen, Exercise Works! is committed to training health professionals about the importance of exercise advice, enabling patients to have the best information and support about exercise, and to motivating patients to enjoy exercise!

Ann is a qualified Clinical Pharmacist and has worked constantly with patients in the following clinical areas: Heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, falls prevention, older patients, elective surgery, theatres, safe effective medicines use, medication review, mental health, and COPD. At a strategic level working in PCTs, a Strategic Health Authority (Head of Health Strategy) and as a Director of Strategic Planning in a Mental Health Trust she is confident at delivering patient focussed care.

Ann wrote to nasa and the National Institute of Ageing and is able to use their exercise advice to help patients and the public to exercise - a one small step for exercise, one large leap for patients inspiration!

In her spare time Ann is also passionate about windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing.

Ann qualified as a Pharmacist in 1983, having studied Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, Nottingham University, England and continues to work with Nottingham University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in developing curricula and resources for health care students together with e-mentoring alumini of the future. She is a Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

John Gates - Director at Exercise Works!

John Gates qualified in 2014 from Coventry University with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and is a Member of The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. His university dissertation was on: “Brief Physical Activity Advice: A high priority opportunity  misunderstood and under-delivered?”.

He previously worked for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and University Hospital of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. He now works as now works as a senior musculoskeletal physiotherapist in an outpatient clinic as part of the  Derby Community Hospital Services NHS Trust. His day-to-day caseload includes adults and older adults with upper limb, lower limb and spinal conditions from GP, consultant and self referrals.

Special interests include healthy lifestyles, shoulder rehabilitation and management of persistent pain alongside the integration of evidence based practice and a biopsychosocial model. Aspirations involve work towards an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner and the completion of a Masters degree in Physiotherapy.  

John is an associate director and consultant to Exercise Works (@exerciseworks on twitter) and has been since 2016. John is keen to develop the role of physiotherapists in the leadership of physical activity initiatives. John has been involved in ParaDance from 2017 as a medical classifier and during the appeals process, training, service improvement and competition dates.

 

He is a keen cyclist and enjoys CrossFit. John is a strong advocate of healthy lifestyles and physical activity. He is passionate about the use of social media to disseminate information and network. He can be found on @GatesPhysio (All views his own, likes/retweets not endorsements).
